Everyday heroes
IT'S WHO THEY ARE
Firefighters say the public has no idea what-all they do. American House of Fire, a new reality show about the working lives of firefighters, takes you into the stations and onto the scene.
In every community on earth, firefighters are bedrock, the salt of the earth. When the crowd runs away from disaster, these guys rush headlong toward it. They do it because they’re trained. Or because they’re called. It’s sure not for the pay.

American House of Fire features the North Charleston Fire Department. With 12 stations and over 225 employees, the NCFD serves the citizens of North Charleston, third largest city in South Carolina and a center for manufacturing and commerce. Set in the midst of an extraordinarily beautiful region called the Lowcountry, "North Chuck" is the industrial heart of a growing community. While nearby Kiawah has the best golf, and neighboring Charleston is known for its history and charm, North Charleston has the jobs. Unfortunately, so are poverty, crime, and all too often fire. The NCFD demonstrates incredible professionalism in the face of constant challenges. As division chief Teddy Smith says, "The citizens of North Charleston should be elated to have the fine men and women of the North Charleston Fire Department doing the job they do."

At some point, just about every kid dreams of becoming a firefighter. Here are the men and women who live that dream in all its grit and sweat, conflict and camaraderie. Cops and firefighters have one thing in common. When they show up, someone’s having a bad day. The difference is, they’re always glad to see firefighters. You will be too.
Come witness the drama, sense the pride, ride on the engine, feel the heat.
